At Coach and Shine CIC, we're all about making mental wellbeing education a fun and essential part of school life! We believe that every child deserves to learn the self-care skills that help them tackle life's ups and downs with confidence.

Introducing Super Me!

Our Super Me programme is designed to help kids boost their self-awareness and get ready for their big roles in the world. It's all about:

  • Developing essential life skills

  • Building stronger relationships

  • Fostering community spirit

Super Me Design

  • Developed to embed emotional intelligence and self-care in key-stage 2 education

  • Piloted across six primary schools in Blackpool and Fleetwood with feedback from children and staff informing further development (May - July, 2024)

  • In November 2024 the full, five week programme was delivered at Chaucer Community Primary School to test out two of our main aims

Aims

  • Utilise classroom Youth Advisors to assess the enjoyment and relevance of the lessons

  • Identify improvement areas proposed by children and teaching staff

  • Evaluate how effectively children retain the information taught to them each week

Delivery

At Chaucer Community Primary School, we worked with Year 3 students, consisting of 18-20 eager learners with nearly half of these needing that bit extra support. Each week, Kelly taught the Super Me content with the support of Natasha. Miss Brooke, the class teacher, was around to lend a hand too.

Each session delivered a new super life skill which included:

  • Fun media clips that sparked imagination

  • Interactive activities that got everyone moving

  • Partner work that encouraged teamwork and collaboration

  • Verbal presentations that built confidence and communication skills

Results

The Super Me programme is all about boosting emotional intelligence in KS2 children by teaching self-awareness. Lessons need to be fun and memorable and guess what?...The results show that we achieved both of these aims!

  • The class teacher recommended fun strategies for delivering lessons to all children, especially those who needed a little extra help

  • On average, a whopping 94% of the class thought the lessons were "great!" The children asked to spend more time learning, drawing and eating chocolate!

  • Recall averaged 56% over all five lessons (without prompts in between weeks). Lesson 3 was the star, with an 80% recall rate and 97% of children ranking this their favourite. On the flip side, Lesson 4 wasn't as memorable, with only 40% remembering it without hints. We will be working on this!

  • Miss Brooke recommended 100% of Super Me lessons to others

What next?

Here's what we will be doing in the background to make Super Me even better...

  • Developing the Youth Advisor roles further to support with class recall

  • Adapting some of our activities to meet with learning styles

  • Checking how well the programme connects with children from all cultures

I had the privilege of working with Kelly in her role of delivering mental health and well-being for the  education of primary school children and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Kelly introduced innovative tools and activities tailored to the children's developmental stages, ensuring every child felt valued and supported. The feedback from the pupils in my class was overwhelmingly positive - Miss Brooke, Class Teacher
